Review of Devara: Part 1

Release Date: September 27, 2024

Starring: NTR, Janhvi Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Shruti Marathe, Srikanth, Prakash Raj, and others.

Director: Koratala Siva

Music Director: Anirudh Ravichander

The highly anticipated movie "Devara: Part 1," featuring Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor in pivotal roles, has finally made its way to theaters. Directed by the acclaimed Koratala Siva, this big-budget action-drama promises a thrilling cinematic experience. Here’s an in-depth look at what the film has to offer.

Story Overview

Set against the backdrop of Ratnagiri, a picturesque coastal village, "Devara: Part 1" immerses viewers in a world of power struggles and moral dilemmas. The story revolves around Devara (played by Jr NTR) and Bhaira (Saif Ali Khan), both influential figures entangled in illegal smuggling operations led by the notorious Muruga (Murali Sharma). As Devara grapples with the ethical implications of their actions, tensions escalate with Bhaira, who is determined to maintain his grip on power at any cost.

When Devara mysteriously disappears for twelve long years, Bhaira seizes control of Ratnagiri, still harboring a deep-seated desire for revenge. Meanwhile, Devara’s son, Vara, is left vulnerable and confused, ultimately becoming an unwitting pawn in Bhaira’s ruthless game. The film weaves a tapestry of intrigue, exploring themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the haunting shadows of the past.

What Works

1. NTR’s Stellar Performance:

Jr NTR shines in his dual role as Devara and Vara, demonstrating his extraordinary acting range. His portrayal of Devara is marked by a compelling blend of humility and ferocity, while his depiction of Vara reflects innocence and vulnerability. NTR's ability to seamlessly transition between these contrasting characters is a testament to his skill as an actor, making him the emotional core of the film.

2. Saif Ali Khan’s Impactful Debut:

Saif Ali Khan delivers a powerful performance as Bhaira, establishing a formidable presence in his Tollywood debut. His character, driven by revenge and ambition, adds significant depth to the narrative. Saif’s dynamic portrayal keeps audiences engaged, effectively complementing NTR’s performance.

3. Thrilling Action Sequences:

The film boasts several adrenaline-pumping action scenes, which are expertly choreographed and executed. These sequences not only entertain but also enhance the film's narrative, showcasing the high stakes involved in the characters' lives. The action elements are visually striking, ensuring viewers are kept on the edge of their seats.

4. Strong Supporting Cast:

The film's supporting cast, including Srikanth, Prakash Raj, and Shruti Marathe, delivers commendable performances that enrich the storyline. Each character contributes to the film’s depth, creating a well-rounded ensemble that adds layers to the narrative.

What Doesn’t Work

1. Predictable Storyline:

While the film is entertaining, its plot can be somewhat predictable. Certain twists and turns, especially in the second half, feel familiar and could have benefitted from more innovative storytelling.

2. Limited Character Development:

Janhvi Kapoor's role as Vara's love interest is disappointingly limited, offering her little chance to showcase her acting talent. Similarly, Saif Ali Khan's character, despite a strong start, feels constrained, especially in the second half, leading to an abrupt and unsatisfying climax.

3. Technical Shortcomings:

While Koratala Siva excels in direction, the screenplay could have been more refined. Some scenes lack the necessary emotional weight, and a tighter edit could have improved pacing, particularly in the film's latter half.

Technical Aspects

Koratala Siva's direction is commendable, though the writing occasionally falters. The cinematography by R. Rathnavelu is visually captivating, effectively capturing the film’s scenic locations and action sequences. Anirudh Ravichander’s music is another highlight, with the standout track “Chittimali” becoming an instant favorite among audiences, adding emotional depth to key moments. Editing by A. Sreekar Prasad is adequate, but the film could have benefitted from a more judicious approach to pacing.

Verdict

In conclusion, "Devara: Part 1" is an action-packed drama that successfully showcases NTR's exceptional performance, alongside solid contributions from Janhvi Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan. While the film grapples with a predictable storyline and pacing issues, it remains an engaging cinematic experience worth watching.

Recommendation: If you’re a fan of Telugu cinema or enjoy action dramas filled with emotion and compelling performances, "Devara: Part 1" is definitely worth your time. Grab your tickets and dive into this thrilling journey that blends power, emotion, and unforgettable music.

Review of The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT)

Release Date: September 5, 2024

Starring: Vijay, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Sneha, Laila, Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Ajmal Ameer, Mohan

Director: Venkat Prabhu

Music Director: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Imagine being a fan of your favorite actor, a great director, and an amazing music composer, all wrapped into one film. “The Greatest of All Time” brings you just that, starring Thalapathy Vijay and directed by Venkat Prabhu, with music by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Story Overview

The movie kicks off with Gandhi (Vijay), a member of the Special Anti-Terrorism Squad (SATS), on a thrilling mission in Kenya to take down a terrorist group led by Menon (Mohan). Years later, while on another mission in Bangkok, Gandhi learns that his son, Jeevan (also Vijay), has died. To his surprise, he later finds Jeevan alive in Russia, and they return home together. But things take a strange turn as Gandhi uncovers dark secrets involving the SATS team. Is Jeevan really his son? What ties does he have with Menon? These questions drive the mystery forward.

What Works

Vijay’s Performance: Thalapathy Vijay shines in dual roles as Gandhi and Jeevan. He skillfully balances the calm and composed father with the villainous son, making his performance a standout aspect of the film.

Supporting Cast: Actors like Prabhu Deva and Prashanth deliver decent performances, adding some charm to the story.

Action Scenes: The face-offs between the two Vijays are well done and keep you on the edge of your seat. The climax, set during a live CSK cricket match, is sure to excite fans.

What Doesn’t Work

Predictable Plot: The storyline follows a familiar path, making it easy to guess what will happen next. Despite promises of unexpected twists, the narrative feels predictable.

Pacing Issues: The first half drags, testing the audience’s patience. Although the second half picks up with thrilling action, the overall length of the film is a drawback.

Weak Villain: Menon, played by Mohan, lacks depth, making him a less compelling villain. Additionally, Meenakshi Chaudhary’s character feels underused.

Technical Flaws: Some humor falls flat, and there are plot holes, especially in action scenes where villains seem unable to hit the protagonist. The VFX work is commendable for de-aging Vijay, but some other effects look awkward.

Final Thoughts

Overall, “The Greatest of All Time” is a standard revenge action drama that heavily relies on Vijay’s star power. While his performances and the action sequences are enjoyable, the film struggles with pacing, predictability, and technical flaws. It might entertain die-hard Vijay fans, but others may find it lacking in excitement and originality.

Review: Saripodhaa Sanivaaram – A Gripping Action Drama with Stellar Performances

Movie Name: Saripodhaa Sanivaaram

Release Date: August 29, 2024

Starring: Nani, SJ Suryah, Priyanka Arul Mohan, Murali Sharma, Sai Kumar, Abhirami, Aditi Balan, Ajay Ghosh, Harshavardhan, Ajay, and others..

Director: Vivek Athreya

Producers: DVV Danayya, Kalyan Dasari

Music Director: Jakes Bejoy

Cinematographer: G Murali

Editor: Karthika Srinivas

Natural Star Nani and talented director Vivek Athreya team up for Saripodhaa Sanivaaram, an action drama that’s been highly anticipated. With Nani playing a complex character, fans were eager to see if the film would live up to the hype. Let's dive in to find out if it hits the mark.

Story:

Surya (Nani) lives by a unique code: suppressing his anger for six days, he only lets it out on Saturdays to settle scores. A tragic event in his hometown of Sokulapalem sets him on a mission for revenge against a brutal police officer, Daya (SJ Suryah). As the story unfolds, Surya must navigate his intense rivalry with Daya, while also dealing with Charulatha (Priyanka Arul Mohan), a mysterious woman who adds to the plot’s complexity. The film reveals why Surya targets Daya and how a corrupt politician (Murali Sharma) plays into the conflict.

Performances:

Nani is fantastic in his role, showcasing a character with two sides—one calm and restrained, the other explosively angry. He handles both aspects effortlessly, especially shining in the intense action sequences.

SJ Suryah steals the show as the villainous cop Daya. His sarcastic dialogue delivery and menacing presence add both tension and humor. In several scenes, he even manages to overshadow Nani with his powerful performance. His role is one of the film's biggest highlights.

Priyanka Mohan is charming in her role as Surya’s love interest, though her screen time is limited. She shares a good chemistry with Nani, contributing to the film’s emotional moments.

Supporting actors like Murali Sharma, Sai Kumar, and Aditi Balan give solid performances, though some characters, especially Murali Sharma’s politician, could have been developed better.

Technical Aspects:

Director Vivek Athreya blends mass appeal with meaningful content, but the pacing of the film could have been tighter. The first half feels slow, focusing more on setting up the characters, while the second half picks up with action-packed scenes. The climax, however, doesn’t quite hit the emotional heights it aims for.

Jakes Bejoy’s background score is exceptional and elevates the film, especially during the high-energy action sequences. G Murali’s cinematography is crisp, with some impressive shots, particularly in the action scenes. The editing, however, could have been sharper to trim down the film's lengthy runtime.

Plus Points:

Nani and SJ Suryah’s brilliant performances

Terrific background score by Jakes Bejoy

Well-shot action sequences

Unique and engaging storyline

Minus Points:

Slow first half

Lengthy runtime

Some underdeveloped characters and pacing issues in the screenplay

Verdict:

On the whole, Saripodhaa Sanivaaram is a gripping action drama with outstanding performances, especially from Nani and SJ Suryah. While the slow pace in parts and lengthy runtime might test your patience, the film’s unique concept, engaging story, and powerful background score make it a solid weekend watch. If you enjoy action films with a blend of emotion and drama,

Saripodhaa Sanivaaram won’t disappoint!

Rating: 3.5/5

Director : Puri Jagannadh

Producers : Puri Jagannadh, Charmme Kaur

Music Director: Mani Sharma

Cinematographer: Gianni Giannelli, Shyam K. Naidu

Editor: Karthika Sreenivas R

"Double iSmart" is the latest action thriller starring Ram Pothineni, directed by Puri Jagannadh. The film came with decent expectations, so let's see how it measures up.

Story:

The plot centers around an international mafia don named Big Bull (played by Sanjay Dutt), who is desperate to cheat death after being diagnosed with a terminal illness called Glioma. A scientist proposes an unconventional solution: transferring Big Bull's memories into another person's brain to achieve a form of immortality. Their search for a suitable candidate leads them to Shankar (Ram Pothineni) in Hyderabad. What follows is a thrilling journey best experienced on the big screen.

TRAILER:-

What Works:

Ram Pothineni reprises his role as iSmart Shankar, and he shines once again in this sequel. His energetic performance, coupled with his intense dialogue delivery, makes for an entertaining watch.

Kavya Thapar, who plays Ram's love interest, shares some decent on-screen moments with him. Sanjay Dutt, as the mafia don, brings a certain gravitas to the movie, although his performance is somewhat underwhelming.

The supporting cast delivers adequate performances, and some of the action scenes are well-executed.

What Doesn't:

While the basic premise justifies a sequel, Puri Jagannadh and his team seem to have lost interest in making the narrative engaging. The story desperately needs a gripping screenplay, which is sorely lacking, especially in the second half. This makes it difficult to stay invested in the film.

The emotional aspects of the story fall flat due to a lack of depth, with many characters feeling like they exist just to fill space. Jhansi's character, for instance, could have had a more significant impact, and her flashback scenes might have added some emotional weight. Pragathi's over-the-top performance is also a distraction.

The comedy fails to land, with Ali's character and his attempts at humor more irritating than funny. The songs and their placement feel out of sync with the narrative, as if they were added just to give the audience a break, but they don't really succeed.

Mani Sharma's signature intense background score, which could have elevated the film, is notably missing in this sequel. The showdown scenes with Sanjay Dutt don't pack the punch they should, making his Telugu debut less impressive than anticipated. His character lacks proper development, and the dubbing feels off.

Starring : Ravi Teja, Bhagyashri Borse, Jagapathi Babu

Director : Harish Shankar

Producers : T.G. Vishwa Prasad

Music Director: Mickey J. Meyer

Cinematographer: Ayananka Bose

Editor: Ujwal Kulkarni

The dynamic duo, Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja and Harish Shankar, have reunited for Mr. Bachchan, which hit theaters today amidst high expectations. Without further ado, dive into our review to see how it fares.

Story Overview:

Anand, better known as Bachchan (played by Ravi Teja), is a no-nonsense income tax officer who finds himself suspended due to his unyielding honesty. Forced to return to his hometown, he unexpectedly falls for Jikki (Bhagyashree Borse), a local woman whose warmth and charm soon win his heart. As their relationship blossoms, Bachchan receives news of his reinstatement. His first mission back on the job is a high-stakes raid on the home of Mutyam Jaggaiah (Jagapathi Babu), a powerful figure in the town. What follows is a thrilling confrontation that puts Bachchan's integrity and determination to the test, with surprises and challenges at every turn.

TRAILER:-

Positive Aspects:

When the film "Mr. Bachchan" was first announced, many questioned the wisdom of remaking the hit movie "Raid." However, director Harish Shankar manages to defy expectations by staying true to the spirit of the original while adapting the story to resonate with Telugu audiences.

Ravi Teja shines in a role that feels tailor-made for him. As the resolute income tax officer and as a man deeply in love with legends like Kishore Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan, he brings a magnetic energy to the screen. His portrayal is not just about the intensity of his job but also the lightness and charm he exudes in his romantic moments. His chemistry with Bhagyashree Borse is palpable, infusing the film with a refreshing warmth.

Bhagyashree Borse is a revelation, delivering a performance that is both glamorous and emotionally resonant. She captivates the audience and leaves a lasting impression, marking her as a talent to watch in Tollywood. Jagapathi Babu, as the intimidating antagonist, commands attention, especially in his gripping face-offs with Ravi Teja. The supporting cast also plays their roles effectively, contributing to the film’s overall impact.

The film’s comedy, spearheaded by Satya, hits the right notes, providing much-needed levity. Mickey J Meyer’s soundtrack adds a vibrant layer to the film, especially with the lively and mass-appealing songs. The inclusion of retro music in the romantic sequences is a nostalgic nod that fans of legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Kishore Kumar will undoubtedly appreciate.

Negative Aspects:

Harish Shankar skillfully weaves together elements of romance, action, comedy, and punchy dialogues, especially in the film's first half, which is sure to entertain mass audiences. However, the second half struggles to maintain this momentum, drifting away from the core plot. The introduction of additional comedy during this part of the film feels misplaced and dilutes the narrative's overall impact. The intensity and mass appeal that were so prominent in the first half seem to wane as the story progresses.

Despite Bhagyashree Borse's strong performance, her character is underutilized in the latter half of the film, with screen time that doesn’t fully explore her potential. Similarly, Jagapathi Babu’s character, initially established as a formidable adversary, loses some of his earlier menace as the story unfolds, weakening the tension built up earlier.

The climax, unfortunately, falls short. It feels outdated and strains credibility, even within the boundaries of mass entertainment. A more thoughtful and innovative approach to the final showdown could have significantly boosted the film’s appeal.

Director : Pa. Ranjith

Producers : K.E. Gnanavelraja, Neha Gnanavelraja

Music Director: G.V. Prakash Kumar

Cinematographer: Kishor Kumar

Editor: Selva Rk

Thangalaan is Vikram’s latest film, which has caught everyone’s imagination. Thanks to the promotions, the film was released today in Telugu with decent hype. Directed by Pa Ranjith, Thangalaan has Malavika Mohanan as the female lead. Read to find out whether the film lives up to all the hype or not.

Story:

"Thangalaan" is set in 1850 CE in the village of Veppur, North Arcot. The story follows Thangalaan, the chief of a tribal group, who is hired by the British to search for gold in his village. This decision angers the local community, led by Aarathi (played by Malavika Mohanan), leading to a fierce conflict between Thangalaan’s tribe and Aarathi’s forces. The film explores how this battle unfolds against the backdrop of British colonial rule.

TRAILER:-

Highlights:

Pa Ranjith has created an impressive setup, with a story, cast, and backdrop that showcase the depth and complexity of his storytelling. "Thangalaan" delves into various themes, including suppression, Buddhism, and the mistreatment of women by men in the tribe, making the narrative rich and layered.

Vikram shines in the title role, delivering a powerful performance that captivates with his look, body language, and dialect. His portrayal of Thangalaan is a standout aspect of the film, leaving a lasting impression.

Malavika Mohanan surprises with her intense performance, breaking away from her usual glamorous roles. Pa Ranjith brings out her best, particularly in her confrontation scenes with Vikram. Parvathy Thiruvothu, who plays Vikram’s wife, also delivers an elegant performance.

The film’s production design is a major asset, with meticulous attention to detail that vividly brings the bygone era to life. The fight sequences are well-executed, adding to the film’s realism, especially in the second half.

Drawbacks:

One noticeable issue is the Telugu dubbing, which, due to being done in sync with the sound, may feel slightly off, requiring some adjustment to the dialogue’s pace. Another significant drawback is the VFX, which is subpar and can be distracting.

While Pa Ranjith is known for his realistic direction and technical skills, the lack of attention to the VFX is disappointing. The film has an art cinema feel but is presented in a commercial format, which may be difficult for hardcore Telugu cinema fans to fully embrace.

Additionally, Pa Ranjith's films often focus on themes of oppression, and this is evident in "Thangalaan" as well. However, after a point, these scenes become predictable and lose their impact. The characters of Malavika Mohanan and her tribe could have been developed more thoroughly, which would have added more depth to the story.

Cast:

- Dhanush

- Sandeep Kishan

- Kalidas Jayaram

- Dushara Vijayan

- Aparna Balamurali

- SJ Suryah

- Saravanan

Director: Dhanush

Producer: Kalanithi Maran

Music Director: A. R. Rahman

Cinematographer: Om Prakash

Editor: Prasanna GK uu

"Raayan" is Dhanush’s 50th film as an actor and his second as a director. The movie hit theaters worldwide today with moderate expectations. Here’s a look at how it turned out.

Story:

Kaartavaraayan, also known as Raayan (played by Dhanush), lives peacefully in Anjanaouram with his brothers Muthuvelaraayan (Sundeep Kishan), Maanikyaraayan (Kalidas Jayaram), and his sister Durga (Dushara Vijayan). Their peaceful life is disrupted when Muthu gets into a fight with the local don, Dorai’s (Saravanan) men, leading to a dangerous feud. Another gangster, Sethuram (SJ Suryah), enters the scene with a deadly plan to kill Raayan. The story unravels why Sethuram wants to kill Raayan, who Raayan really is, and what his true mission is.

TRAILER:-

Positive Points:

When the film was announced, there was a lot of excitement because Dhanush was both acting and directing. Besides his strong acting, Dhanush shows his directing talent well.

Sundeep Kishan plays an important role and does a great job, especially in his scenes with Dhanush and Aparna Balamurali.

Dushara Vijayan surprises with her strong performance, especially in the second half. SJ Suryah delivers an excellent performance, as expected. Aparna Balamurali, Selvaraghavan, and the others do a decent job in their roles.

Negative Points:

The movie doesn't offer much new for viewers. Dhanush presents a typical story with few surprises, but the slow pace of the movie reduces its impact.

There isn’t a strong reason shown for the conflict between SJ Suryah’s and Dhanush’s characters, making it less convincing. Also, SJ Suryah's character could have been used better.

The film mainly appeals to action lovers and may not be suitable for families because of the violence.

Prakash Raj’s character lacks originality, and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s role doesn’t add much to the plot. The movie could have been better with more emotional depth. The second half feels dragged out, with some unnecessary scenes added just to make the movie longer.
